Many scholars assume converting a doctoral thesis into a book is a matter of tidying. It is not. They are different genres written for different readers with different purposes, and the changes are structural.
Different jobs
A thesis demonstrates to a small expert committee that you are competent to hold a doctorate. It must show command of the literature, justify its methodology, and defend itself against every anticipated objection.
A monograph makes an argument to peers who already assume your competence. It must be interesting, and it must earn attention that nobody is obliged to give.
The four changes
The literature review shrinks dramatically
In a thesis it establishes command. In a monograph, readers already know the field and do not need a survey of it.
Some of it disperses into the chapters where it is actually relevant. Some becomes a few paragraphs in the introduction. Much of it goes entirely. This alone often removes 10,000 words.
Methodology moves out of the way
Your methods chapter justified your approach to examiners. Readers want to know how you did it, but they want it briefly, and usually in an appendix or a compressed section rather than at the front.
Your contribution moves forward
Thesis structure builds towards the contribution. Readers of a book need the argument early — often in the introduction — and then the evidence.
Frequently this means the material that was chapter four becomes chapter one, and everything reorganises around it. This is the biggest single change and the most uncomfortable.
The hedging reduces
Theses hedge because examiners probe. "This suggests that, under certain conditions, it may be possible to argue…" was defensive writing, and defence is no longer the purpose. State the claim, then support it.
Expect to cut
Typically 15 to 30 per cent. Authors find this alarming and then, usually, find the book better for it. What goes is nearly always material that existed to satisfy examiners rather than to inform readers.
Two things to add
A voice. Theses are written in an institutional register that suppresses the author. A monograph can have a person in it, and the good ones do.
A reason to care. Theses can assume the reader is obliged to continue. Books cannot. The introduction has to make a case for the next 300 pages.
How long it takes
Realistically three to nine months of your own work, on top of any editing. It is a genuine revision, not a tidy-up. Budget for it, and be sceptical of any advice suggesting otherwise.
