Illustration representing book cover design

Your cover has one job before it has any other: tell a browsing reader, in about two seconds, what kind of book this is and whether it is for them.

That is a genre problem before it is an aesthetic one. Readers scanning a category page are pattern-matching against hundreds of covers, and those patterns are real — literary fiction and commercial thrillers signal themselves through completely different typographic and photographic conventions. A cover that ignores the conventions of its category reads as amateur even when it is objectively beautiful. So our process starts with research: your designer studies what the current leading titles in your exact category are doing, and briefs against it deliberately.

Then design. You get distinct concepts — genuinely different directions, not three colourways of the same idea — with your feedback shaping the one you select through refinement rounds. Every cover is designed as a full wrap: front, spine and back, with the spine width calculated from your actual page count and paper stock so the print is correct.

We test every cover at thumbnail size, because that is how most readers first meet it. A title that is unreadable at 120 pixels has failed regardless of how it looks at full size. We also check it in greyscale, since a great many covers are first seen on an e-ink screen.

You receive print-ready files and separate optimised versions for retailers and social media. The design is yours, with full commercial rights.

What we need from you

Requirements

Having these ready before we start is what keeps the timeline honest.

  • Completed design brief, including two or three comparable covers you admire
  • Final title, subtitle and author name as they should appear
  • Back cover copy and author biography (we can help you write these)
  • Final page count and paper stock, needed before the spine can be built

Production timelines are estimates. Actual schedules vary with manuscript length, revision rounds, author response time and third-party retailer processing.

How it works

Book Cover Design, stage by stage

  1. 1

    Design brief

You complete a brief covering tone, audience, comparable titles you admire and anything you actively dislike. This is the single most useful hour you will spend.

  2. 2

    Category research

Your designer studies how current leading titles in your category present themselves, and what conventions are load-bearing.

  3. 3

    Concepts

You receive distinct directions as front covers first, so you can react to the idea before detail.

  4. 4

    Refinement

You choose one and it develops through revision rounds — typography, imagery, colour, hierarchy.

  5. 5

    Wrap and files

The chosen design extends to spine and back cover, spine width is calculated from your final page count, and all files are delivered.

About book cover design

Request a consultation

It is rare, but it happens — almost always because the brief and the book were pulling in different directions. We go back to the brief with you, work out what was missed, and produce a fresh round at no extra cost.

Yes, provided you own it or have a licence covering commercial book use. Send it at the highest resolution you have; we will tell you honestly whether it will reproduce at print size.

You do, with full commercial rights. Any licensed stock imagery is licensed in your name for book use. You receive the flattened print files; layered source files are available on request.

Spine width is a physical measurement: page count multiplied by paper thickness. Get it wrong by two millimetres and the cover wraps incorrectly — the front image creeps onto the spine. This is why the cover is finalised after the interior.
