Publicity is pitching. A publicist identifies people who might legitimately be interested in your book, contacts them properly, and makes it easy for them to say yes. What they cannot do is make anyone say yes, and any publicist implying otherwise is not being straight with you.

It starts with the angle. Almost no book is interesting to media because it exists; it is interesting because it connects to something an audience already cares about — a debate, an anniversary, a local story, expertise on something in the news, or a personal story with unusual reach. Finding that angle is most of the job, and it is done before a single email goes out.

Then materials: a press release built around the angle rather than around the blurb, a media kit with your biography, high-resolution images, cover files and sample chapters, and a set of suggested interview questions that make a producer's job easier.

Then a targeted list — podcasts, radio, print, online outlets and newsletters that genuinely cover your subject — and a personalised pitch to each. Mass-blasting a generic release is what gives book PR its reputation, and we do not do it.

You also get interview preparation: your key messages, the difficult questions, and a practice session. Being pitched well and then performing badly wastes the whole campaign.

You receive full reporting on every outlet contacted and every response. We report on outreach, not on coverage, because coverage is an editorial decision made by people we do not control.

What we need from you

Requirements

Having these ready before we start is what keeps the timeline honest.

  • A published or imminently publishing book
  • Genuine availability for interviews, including at awkward times
  • A high-resolution author photograph
  • Willingness to talk about the subject, not just the book

Production timelines are estimates. Actual schedules vary with manuscript length, revision rounds, author response time and third-party retailer processing.

Questions

About public relations

Request a consultation

No, and neither can anyone else. Coverage is an editorial decision made by journalists and producers who owe us nothing. We guarantee the outreach — researched targets, personalised pitches, structured follow-up, and a full report of every contact. If a publicist guarantees placements, ask them exactly which outlet they control.

A connection to something an audience already cares about: expertise on a live issue, a striking personal story, a local angle, a timely anniversary, or genuine controversy. Books with no angle beyond their own existence are the hardest to place, which is why we do the angle work first.

Long-lead print outlets work two to four months ahead, so pitching should begin roughly three months before publication. Podcasts and online outlets move faster but still book weeks out.

That is normal and it is what the preparation session is for. We work through your key messages, rehearse the difficult questions and practise. Most authors find the second interview considerably easier than the first.
