Nonfiction Publishing Packages

Nonfiction is judged on whether a reader can find what they need and trust what they read. Structure, sourcing and navigation carry more weight here than in any other category.

Illustration representing nonfiction publishing packages

The hardest problem in nonfiction is almost never the writing. It is the architecture — deciding what belongs in which chapter, in what order, and what the reader already knows at each point.

Authors usually write nonfiction in the order they learned the material, which is rarely the order a reader needs it. A developmental edit catches this. It is the difference between a book people finish and a book people describe as "interesting but hard to get through". If your book is teaching something, Signature is worth serious consideration for that reason alone.

Then there is apparatus: notes, references, a bibliography, and — for anything reference-shaped — a real index. An index compiled by a professional indexer is not the same as a list of search terms; it is a map of the book's ideas, and it is what makes a nonfiction title useful to libraries and to readers who return to it. Indexing is included in Laureate and available as an add-on to any other package.

Finally, discoverability. Nonfiction buyers search by problem, not by author. Getting your BISAC categories, keywords and description right is a genuine sales lever for this category in a way it is not for literary fiction, and it is included from Craft upwards.

Where to weight your budget

What matters most for nonfiction

1

Structure before sentences

A developmental edit fixes the reading order. Copyediting a badly structured book only polishes the problem.

2

Credible sourcing

Notes, references and a citation check protect your authority. Signature and Laureate include the checking pass.

3

A real index

Professional indexing makes reference books usable and is what library buyers look for.

4

Search-led discoverability

Categories, keywords and a description written for how readers actually search.
