Audio is where a meaningful share of book consumption now happens, and it reaches readers who will never buy a print copy: commuters, walkers, people who read with their hands busy, and readers with visual impairments or print disabilities.

It starts with the narrator, which is the decision that matters most. You audition candidates reading a passage from your actual book — not a generic sample — and choose. Accent, age, warmth, pace and the ability to hold distinct character voices all matter, and the right choice is specific to your book.

Recording happens in a treated studio to retail audio specification. A director sits in for fiction and memoir, catching mispronunciations, flattened emotional beats and inconsistent character voices while they can still be fixed in the same session rather than in a costly pickup.

Post-production is invisible and essential: editing out breaths and mouth noise, correcting room tone between takes so the join is inaudible, mastering to the loudness and noise-floor requirements retailers enforce. Then proof-listening — a person listening to the entire book against the text, catching skipped words and repeated lines that automated checks miss.

Files are delivered chapter by chapter, correctly named and tagged, at retail specification. Pricing depends on finished hours, narrator and whether direction is included, so it is quoted after we see the manuscript.

What we need from you

Requirements

Having these ready before we start is what keeps the timeline honest.

  • Final published text — audiobooks are recorded from the finished book
  • A pronunciation guide for unusual names, places and invented words
  • Your narrator preference in terms of voice, accent and age
  • Realistic scheduling: a full-length audiobook takes months, not weeks

Production timelines are estimates. Actual schedules vary with manuscript length, revision rounds, author response time and third-party retailer processing.

How it works

Audiobook Production, stage by stage

  1. 1

    Casting

A shortlist of narrators records a passage from your book. You choose.

  2. 2

    Preparation

A pronunciation guide is built for names, places and invented terms before recording starts.

  3. 3

    Recording

Studio sessions with direction, recorded and reviewed in batches.

  4. 4

    Post-production

Edited, cleaned and mastered to the specification retailers require.

  5. 5

    Proof-listen and delivery

A proof-listener follows the text through the whole recording; corrections are re-recorded, then files are delivered.

Questions

About audiobook production

Request a consultation

For memoir and business books, often yes — your own voice carries authority that a hired narrator cannot replicate. For fiction, it is harder than it sounds; sustaining character voices across ten hours is a genuine skill. We will give you an honest assessment after hearing you read a chapter.

Because cost is driven by finished hours, the narrator you choose and whether direction is included. A 4-hour business book and a 22-hour epic fantasy are not comparable projects, so a starting price would mislead more than it helped.

It is improving and it is cheap, and for some reference and technical books it is defensible. For fiction and memoir, listeners still notice — audiobook reviews are unusually blunt about it. We will discuss it honestly rather than ruling it out, but we would not recommend it for a book that depends on emotional delivery.

Roughly one finished hour per 9,000 words. An 80,000-word novel usually lands around nine hours of finished audio, which takes considerably longer than nine hours to record.
