About this session

We look at real covers at the size readers actually see them, in the grids they actually appear in, and work out what is doing the job and what is decoration.

Covers category conventions and why they exist, the thumbnail and greyscale tests, typography that survives being small, and the specific reasons that beautiful covers sometimes fail commercially.

Bring your own cover or work in progress — the final twenty minutes are spent looking at attendee covers, with permission.

What you will take away

  • How to run the thumbnail and greyscale tests on your own cover
  • Why category conventions exist and when breaking them works
  • How to write a design brief a designer can actually use
